Gravimetric analysis
Gravimetric analysis is a laboratory technique used to determine the amount of a substance in a sample by measuring the mass of a chemical compound formed after a reaction. The basic principle involves converting the element to be analyzed into a stable, pure compound of known composition, which can be accurately weighed after being filtered, washed, dried, or ignited.
In the ceramic field, this analysis is used to:
- Determine the content of moisture, carbonates, metal oxides, or organic residues in raw materials (clays, kaolins, feldspars).
- Check the purity of mixtures and the composition of intermediate or finished products.
- Evaluate weight loss during firing, which helps predict material behavior during sintering.
- Monitor product quality and consistency across production batches.
