Dispersants

Dispersants are a class of additives used to adjust and optimize the rheological properties of aqueous suspensions of glazes and engobes. Their application allows manufacturers to fine-tune several parameters depending on the desired outcome. In general, dispersants act on the viscosity of the system, improving the workability of the mixtures and ensuring a uniform application on ceramic substrates.

Depending on their chemical composition, dispersants can influence key parameters such as:

  • Yeld point: They help initiate the movement of solid particles, making the suspension easier to apply.
  • Thixotropy: They regulate the suspension’s behavior under shear stress, improving stability during application and preventing surface defects.
  • Viscosity: They allow precise control over the fluidity of the suspension.
  • Rheological stability over time: They help maintain consistent properties, preventing sedimentation or unwanted changes during storage and use.

Thanks to these properties, dispersants not only enhance production efficiency and the quality of ceramic coatings, but also help reduce waste and ensure greater consistency throughout the manufacturing process.
