Top glaze
In ceramic tile manufacturing, the "top glaze" is a glassy surface layer applied at the end of the decoration process, just before the final firing.
The term specifically refers to the outermost coating, laid over previous decorative or functional layers such as digital inks, engobes, or intermediate glazes.
Functions and roles of the top glaze:
1. SURFACE PROTECTION: The top glaze shields the underlying decoration from wear, scratches, chemicals, stains, and moisture, enhancing the tile's durability.
2. AESTHETIC FINISH: It defines the tile’s final appearance—whether glossy, matte, satin, high-shine, or textured—and influences the perceived color and visual depth of the design.
3.MECHANICAL STRENGH: It improves resistance to abrasion and foot traffic, which is essential for floor tiles, especially in high-traffic areas like shopping malls and public spaces.
4. ADVANCED FUNCTIONALITIES: In some cases, top glazes are engineered to provide special technical features such as chemical resistance, anti-slip properties, self-cleaning behavior (through photocatalytic or hydrophobic effects), or tactile finishes like soft-touch surfaces.
