Before a ceramic suspension—such as an engobe, semi-gloss coating, or glaze—goes into full-scale production, it’s typically tested by additive suppliers to ensure it performs reliably on the line. These application tests are crucial for avoiding issues during manufacturing and confirming that the material meets industrial standards.
Using samples provided by ceramic producers, technicians replicate real application conditions and assess key factors like drying time, water repellency, density, viscosity, and how the material lays on the surface. In the case of engobe or semi-gloss applications, the interaction between successive layers can also be analyzed to optimize the sequence and achieve the desired results.
A core part of the process involves weighing the ceramic substrate before and after spraying. This data is critical, as it impacts production choices and helps ensure consistent material usage across the line.
