Engobe
The word "engobe" comes from the French "engober": to cover with a layer of soil.
The layer of engobe that covers the raw ceramic body, applied after the early pressing phase and before the following applications that take place along the glazing line, helps to cover and hide the color of the raw ceramic tile, by developing a white background. A white thin layer.
Chemically speaking, the composition of an engobe is similar to that of a glaze (opaque and very refractory).
Its chemical formulation is developed to properly react with inks and glazes during the firing process.
